Surgeons Perform Better After Wii Use!

Look Inside: Wii Console For Sale

Learning to practice medicine – even surgical techniques – can be aided by some simple (Wii) games designed for fun. That’s a conclusion based on research by Kanav Kahol of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, and Marshall Smith of the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.

Kahol and Smith conducted studies in which trainee surgeons played a Nintendo Wii video game called Marble Mania, which requires players to develop dexterity in their hand movements to succeed at the game.

Practising your surgical skills on a gaming console! I’ve heard it all now. We always knew the Wii is a revolutionary machine but this story surprised even us! It has been shown that kids who play a lot of video games are actually developing longer, more dexterous fingers and this would seem to tie in with this medical story in that regard. We might even see medical training applications being coded for consoles like the Wii in the future, who knows! I can see it now .. two trainee surgeons battling hard in a surgical face off in the virtual theatre armed with their Wii remotes! What a brave new world we live in.

The Wii game players showed 48 percent more improvement in their surgical techniques than the non-players.

Wow! That’s a huge improvement. A really conclusive result which goes a long way to showing that gaming is not only for fun! It can have some real practical uses as more and more studies are beginning to show. More power to the Wii!

Can You Do More Than Play Games On Your Wii?

Look inside: Wii Systems In Stock

These days, every gaming system in your living room better be able to do more than just play video games if it’s going to earn its place next to your TV.

Yeah? Well my prototype Wii 3600 Turbo Nutter 4×4 console wakes me up in the morning, makes my breakfast, fetches the paper, warms the car up for me and does all the housework while I’m at work.

When it comes to expanding your home theater beyond gaming, the Wii has always been a bit light on functionality. The best thing it’s got going for it is the excellent Opera web browser, but web browsing with the Wii remote is still a bit clunky.

Yes it’s true enough. The Wii definitely doesn’t impress in this area. The Opera Web browser is a nifty little bit of software but unfortunately many Web site developers do not code their web sites with Opera in mind. Consequently you’ll probably find lots of web sites which do not display properly in Opera unfortunately. This is not a problem with Opera but is a side effect of the huge market dominance of Microsoft and Internet Explorer.

Luckily, using that very same browser, you can turn your Wii into a full-fledged media center with the freeware Windows application Orb.

I was quite excited about this when I heard the news and I wasted no time in giving Orb a good workout. Unfortunately I found that the video quality was fairly poor and I could not actually watch it for long. Another real annoyance was the fact that I couldn’t seem to get a video to play all the way through without it stuttering and buffering many times during playback.

The Wii And Undiscovered Classics…

February 15, 2008 Posted by WiiMan

It’s nice to see someone praising the Wii. This Nintendo offering is probably the best thing to hit the gaming market, EVER! I mean that too. It’s the first thing that ever broke a sweat on my 12 year old’s game playing experience. Twiddling his PS2 controller has never done the slightest thing for his exercise needs. But the Wii does!

If there’s one thing the Wii has plenty of, it’s scrolling shooters, vertical and horizontal. Thanks to the Virtual Console, the Wii has probably the best library of shmups in history. You can go play something like Lords of Thunder or Blazing Lazers right now without even having to go to a store first. That’s pretty compelling.

Which means that original disc-based shooters actually face a lot of competition from the VC. If you’re just now discovering that you love shooters, you can get some of the best ones ever made for a few bucks. That could mean trouble for Castle of Shikigami III, Monkey King and Blast Works.

Who doesn’t love shooters? I mean, John Wayne in Stagecoach… ah, wrong shooter… But the shoot em up games were there at the beginning. It’s good to know that they are still there and going strong. What is it about us humans that we want to shoot things? We’re a pretty mean bunch when you think about it…

If you like shooters, are you content with the vintage offerings? Do you feel that there’s enough of a reason to continue checking out the new games, or have you been reveling in undiscovered classics?

Both, really. There’s a place for everything, with everything in its place, or something like that. I love rediscovering undiscovered classics that I once discovered so long ago that I had forgotten. Don’t you?

Waiting Over – Line Rider Rides Again On The Wii!

February 14, 2008 Posted by WiiMan

Do you hate waiting for something, a game or a product, to be released? Me too! I guess we all do, actually. It’s one of our pet hates – being kept hanging on a lead, waiting, waiting, and waiting some more… But here’s good news for those of you have been waiting for the Wii version of Line Rider:

For those of you who’ve been anxiously awaiting the DS and Wii versions of Line Rider, know that your wait is almost over. After not hearing a single peep about the game during 2007, this year brings news that not only is the game releasing this summer, but that developers have been hard at work on the game for quite some time. This title isn’t going away!

You’re right there. This title is definitely here to stay. OK, you have to wait until summer, and it’s not out of the question that the wait will be prolonged – no, stay positive. It WILL come out in summer!

Other than a release date, the folks at InXile are keeping their mouths shut. We wouldn’t expect any more information, as these folks have proven they’re great at keeping their mouths shut about leaking details.

Don’t you hate that too? I do. You have a little bit of information, but you want more. Lots more! But all you get is silence. And no guarantee that your looooooooooong wait will ever be over (stay positive!).

Wii Have Lots More Wait For No More Heroes

February 13, 2008 Posted by WiiMan

People do get all riled up about games, whether it’s on the Wii, the Xbox, the PS3, or whatever. It’s just a game, for goodness sakes! But to be fair, I kinda agree with them here; the “extra bloody” version put out in the US of No More Heroes had that extra edge to it…

European gamers are already feeling pretty sensitive about No More Heroes, since they’re getting the original Japanese version and not the “extra bloody” American version. Now there’s one more thing to complain about, as Rising Star Games has bumped the release date back a week from February 29th to March 7th. That’s not too long to wait, but considering that the game has been out for two months in Japan and one month in the U.S., we can imagine how it would sting.

Ahhhh… The extra waiting! Everyone hates to wait longer than they’ve originally been told they will have to wait. This is so in any situation, but gamers are particularly touchy when the wait gets lengthened. Still, it’s only a week (Oh dear… Maybe I shouldn’t have said that).

In lighter news (to distract the European audience from the boiling rage they’re sinking into), check out Suda 51′s joking, Suda-like design idea for an ‘adult’ Mario game: “Maybe Mario could wear an Italian suit and have a machine gun,” he hypothesized, adding, “But Nintendo probably wouldn’t like that idea.” Oh, Suda, you certainly do enjoy making games about professional killers.

I’m not sure if Suda’s joking quite makes up for the extra wait. Neither does the European audience, at least, I’m willing to bet that’s the case. Anyway, it’s hardly a joke, or at least, not a funny one. So, Suda 51 jokes about the makers of the Wii. So what! It’s puerile at best, and silly at worst. But then again, what do I know. I just love playing the games…

Wiihabilitation – A New Level For The Wii Console

February 12, 2008 Posted by WiiMan

The Wii was always going to be in a completely different class to other gaming platforms. It took a unique approach from the start, arguably an approach that all games should have; a reality driven one. No real surprise then that the Wii has found a new niche in the world of therapy.

The Wii’s latest nickname, earned for entertaining therapy is “Wiihabilitation” and it points toward a core difference between the Wii and competing PS3 and Xbox 360, which focus more on hardcore adult gamers.

Well, of course the Wii has a “core difference” to the other competing gaming platforms. There’s really been nothing quite like it – ever!

Medics are using the Wii to encourage body movements “similar to traditional therapy but [that provide] so much distraction patients do not notice the discomfort,” according to Telegraph.

The Wii can do that to you. Time flies when you’re having fun, and therapy can obviously be fun when it’s the Wii that’s the focus. I can easily imagine getting well through playing on the Wii!

James Osborn who oversees rehabilitation services at Herrin Hospital in southern Illinois says “even though you may be boxing or playing tennis against some figure on the screen, it’s amazing how many of our patients want to beat their opponent.”

Beating the opponent is what it’s all about. We seem to have an inate desire to flatten things. Normally we don’t attack other humans, but when they are represented on a screen, and no one actually gets hurt, then even frail old ladies will give it an extra whack, just for the heck of it!

Though players battling in Halo for Xbox 360 are sure to feel the bloodlust for victory too, most of that rage will have to be channeled through a few fingers and thumbs moving back and forth. Welcome back to the era of Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Playstation. But of course the graphics and sound are far superior now and bonuses like a DVD or Blu-ray player are thrown into the mix. Xbox 360 and PS3 are focused on convergence while Wii is continuing to find new ways to game.

That’s the whole thing in a nutshell; Nintendo with the Wii are seeking out the new, the innovative way, the final frontier, if you like – “To boldly go…” and all that stuff. Is it any wonder that Wii love it?

To be fair, the benefits of Wiihabilitation haven’t been well quantified yet, “researchers at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis are working with the University of Minnesota to design a study to measure how patients’ function are affected by Wii therapy.”

Let’s put it this way. I’ll be amazed if they don’t find that the Wii is good for therapy. It just makes sense! All that boring old-fashioned therapuetic stuff may work to some extent. but I’ll bet that movement based on an exciting adventure like a good Wii game will work better.

Nintendo also doesn’t market the Wii as a device to enhance physical therapy, though that’s not stopping it from developing Wii Fit which claims to provide “an extensive array of fun and dynamic activities, including aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and games.”

Yes, Nintendo are obviously aware of the benefits to be gained from playing the Wii, which demands a degree of exercise. Yes, Playstation and Xbox consoles will certainly exercise your fingers, but actually standing up and moving will provide better exercise every time. That’s the difference!
